F.A.Q. and Information
All of our finishes are sprayed on to provide a smooth even surface, free from brush marks.
Oil Finishes We offer two choices of oil finish to enhance the natural beauty of the wood: Teak Oil and Boiled Linseed Oil.
Teak Oil soaks deep into the wood, seals, protects and contains ultraviolet absorbers to resist weathering. When used on teak, this oil protects the natural honey color and prevents the natural graying of the wood. It also contains fungicides to help prevent mold and mildew from forming.
Boiled Linseed Oil is a clear oil that soaks into the pores of the wood providing a non glossy surface that shows off the grain. Wood treated with Linseed oil is resistant to denting and scratches
Solid Stain: We use only Sherwin Williams Solid stains. Please provide the Sherwin Williams solid stain color code of your choice at checkout. These stains penetrate the surfaces and seal the wood to help protect it from the elements while providing a desired color. The finish is a smooth color but not glossy. This finish is easy to maintain.
Paint We use only Sherwin Williams high grade exterior paint in your choice of color. Please provide the Sherwin Williams paint color code of your choice at checkout. We apply an oil based primer then two coats of exterior paint. The finished product is smooth and glossy.
Clear Coat A smooth as glass surface on any of our products, a clear coat will slightly darken the wood’s natural color, seal out moisture and provide a smooth surface to wipe clean. This finish is not recommended if you will be placing your products in direct sunlight but rather is intended for covered patios and porches.
Woods Cypress The Cypress tree grows mainly along the southern coastlines and inland areas. The tree produces an oil called cypressine which acts as a natural preservative within the wood. This inherent characteristic of the Southern Cypress makes it durable and extremely resistant to harsh weather conditions, insects and fungus.
Since Cypress wood lacks sap and doesn't bleed, it takes well to sealers, stains and paints. Its color varies in shades of light to dark honey. If left outdoors unfinished in its natural state, the appearance of the wood will become a light pewter color over time.
Mahogany Timeless and traditional, Mahogany is a hardwood and has a beautiful grain and a reddish-brown color, which darkens over time, and displays a beautiful reddish sheen when polished. It is also very durable, insect and rot resistant and regarded by many as the premier wood for making fine furniture.
We use genuine mahogany and recommend that it be sealed with oil or clear coated to show off the rich grain and color. It may also be left natural and will weather to a light silvery gray.
Teak Teak is a type of hardwood from the southern and southeastern portion of Asia. While there are actually three different species of teak, the most common – conveniently called Common Teak – is almost always the variety used for construction and crafting.
Teak is a unique wood that if left in its natural state, is virtually maintenance-free. Teak can be left outside year round, surviving even the most extreme weather conditions. Therefore, teak is often considered the gold standard for outdoor furniture.
Over time untreated Teak furniture which is exposed to the sun will patina and turn a silvery, grey color. This process is cosmetic and does not harm the strength or quality of the wood. Because of its unique properties and if properly cared for, teak furniture can last for generations providing your family with a quality heirloom.
Because of the naturally oily properties of teak, we only offer teak unfinished or with an application of teak oil.
Care and Maintenance
Wood is a living material and will continue to respond to climate conditions even after being made into a piece of furniture. Any furniture left unprotected will weather to a silvery gray and you may notice some raised grain as it ages. This is normal and doesn’t affect the structural integrity of the furniture. We do recommend that you periodically wash your furniture using mild soap and water to remove dirt or stains.
Oils We recommend a periodic maintenance application of the oils, especially if your furniture is placed in direct sunlight or if you live near the coast and your furniture is exposed to salt air.
Simply apply using a multi-purpose spray bottle and wipe off the excess oil with a clean, lint free cloth. You may also use a foam brush. Please read all instructions on the label of the oil you use and always follow proper procedures for discarding rags.
Solid Stain We recommend that once or twice a year, depending on your weather conditions, that you clean your furniture with mild soap and water. If refinishing, clean with a mixture of 10% bleach and water to remove any dirt or mildew. Allow to dry fully in the sun. Lightly sand down any raised grain and brush on another coat of solid stain.
Paint We recommend that you periodically clean your furniture with mild soap and water. If refinishing, clean with a mixture of 10% bleach and water to remove any dirt or mildew. Allow to fully dry. Sand down any chipped paint and apply another coat of high grade exterior paint.
Clear Coat Dust with a dry cloth periodically. If not placed in direct sunlight, this finish will last for a couple of years before any maintenance is needed. Check regularly for fading or yellowing. If refinishing, clean with a slightly damp cloth. Allow to dry. Lightly sand then apply a coat of Schooner varnish or spar varnish.
